"Був смажень, і швимки яскі…": Вірш Jabberwockyy Льюіса Керрола в українських перекладах

Abstract

У статті розглядається англомовна поезія нонсенсу як перекладацька проблема та висвітлюються основні труднощі при відтворенні її українською. Головна увага приділена одному із найвідоміших зразків англійської поезії нонсенсу – віршу Льюїса Керрола «Jabberwocky» з роману «Through the Looking-Glass» та його версіям українською, створеним М. Лукашем, Т. Тарабукіною та В. Панченком. В статті подано стислий огляд історії перекладів цього вірша Льюїса Керрола українською: вітчизняна перекладацька керроловіана бере початок у 60-ті рр. ХХ століття, але ї розквіт припадає на перше десятиліття ХХІ століття, коли вийшло друком одразу кілька нових перекладів романів класика англійського нонсенсу. Автори висвітлюють поетологічну специфіку зазначеного вірша та позначають проблемні точки, що ускладнюють переклад цього твору іншими мовами. До таких відносимо, зокрема, наявність значної кількості оказіоналізмів, каламбурів, гри слів, фонетичних стилістичних засобів, зокрема алітерації. Аналіз перекладацьких стратегій вітчизняних майстрів поетичного перекладу дозволив зробити низку спостережень та узагальнень. По-перше, перекладаючи вірш «Jabberwocky», варто урахувати наступні мовно-стилістичні аспекти: широке вживання оказіоналізмів, алітерацію, віршований розмір та специфіку римування. По-друге, варто взяти до уваги тематико-ідейний спектр вірша та його загальний піднесений пафос, що ріднять його з творами середньовічного героїчного епосу, і в цьому ключі обирати загальну тональність перекладу. З усіх проаналізованих варіантів найближчим до духу й букви оригіналу є версія класика українського поетичного перекладу М. Лукаша. В цілому, адекватне і хоча б частково еквівалентне відтворення англійської поезії нонсенсу українською залишається складним та вимогливим завданням для перекладача. The paper considers English nonsense poetry as a translation problem and highlights the main difficulties in reproducing it in Ukrainian. The main attention is paid to one of the most famous examples of English nonsense poetry – Lewis Carroll's poem «Jabberwocky» from the novel «Through the Looking-Glass» and its versions in Ukrainian by M. Lukash, T. Tarabukina and V. Panchenko. The article provides a brief overview of the history of translations of this poem by Lewis Carroll into Ukrainian: the national translational Carrolliana dates back to the 60s of the twentieth century, but its heyday is connected with the first decade of the twenty-first century when several new translations of the classic English nonsense novel were published. The authors highlight the poetological specificity of this poem and identify problematic points that complicate the translation of this work into other languages. These include, in particular, the presence of a significant number of occasionalisms, puns, wordplay, and phonetic stylistic devices, including alliteration. The analysis of the translation strategies of domestic masters of poetic translation has allowed us to make a number of observations and generalizations. Firstly, when translating the poem «Jabberwocky», one should take into account the following linguistic and stylistic aspects: the wide use of occasionalisms, alliteration, verse size, and specific rhyme. Secondly, it is necessary to take into account the thematic and ideological spectrum of the poem and its general elevated pathos, which make it similar to the works of medieval heroic epic, and in this vein to choose the general tone of the translation. Of all the analyzed variants, the closest to the spirit and letter of the original is the version of the classic Ukrainian poetic translation by M. Lukash. In general, an adequate and at least partially equivalent reproduction of English nonsense poetry in Ukrainian remains a difficult and challenging task for a translator.
